About the Swann

Sometimes it’s about the trip getting to the launch, but it is always about the water. I am Uhurina Swann, an avid kayaker since the spring of 2014. I usually paddle alone. As a writer, I want to share my joy of being on the water and the flora and fauna I encounter along the way, both in the water and on the shore. Most of my travels are in the Pittsburgh area. Little bits of history and local landmarks will sneak in, and some will be ever-present, along with some of the harmful things I discover. I hope more people will become aware of the effect undesirable items can and do have. I hope optimistic readers will take an interest in helping to maintain the beauty and how precious our waters are. The blog is bimonthly.

About Blue

Blue is my first kayak. She is a 12′ Pelican, more green than blue, and weighs about 42 pounds. She is often the first kayak to go out in the season. Sliding into Blue is like hanging out with an old friend you have not seen in a while. She is not sleek but well-worn and a bit faded. She leaks a little, still, she is sound and one of the best listeners around if you need to chat. Blue’s a stable boat and hard to tip, reliable for friends who do not paddle often.

Catch of the Day

Catch of the day highlights items found in or around the water that typically do not belong.
